2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line Puts Styling Over Performance

Following the introduction of the adventurous Explorer Timberline, Ford now has a new way of attracting midsize SUV buyers.

The 2022 Explorer ST-Line is not a real performance variant like the Explorer ST, which features a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine producing 400 horsepower, but it certainly looks like it. With this model, Ford is emulating German automakers that offer sporty appearance packages on entry- and mid-level grades.

Instead of the aforementioned high-output V6, the engine under the hood is a 2.3-litre four-cylinder rated at 300 horsepower. The transmission is the same 10-speed automatic, mind you.

Highlights include 20-inch machined aluminum wheels and a blacked-out grille, fascia-integrated dual exhaust tips, gloss-black “EXPLORER” hood badging and unique black-out treatment for headlamps and taillamps.

Inside, the dark theme continues with Ebony Black ActiveX-trimmed seats. You’ll also find a sport-style steering wheel and red accent stitching throughout. The ST-Line further stands out with a 12-speaker B&O sound system, 360-degree camera and Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist+ technology.

Canadian pricing for the 2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line starts at $51,059 including destination and delivery, which is admittedly quite competitive. It’s also $10,000 cheaper than a full-blown Explorer ST. Deliveries will begin later this year.

Other upgrades across the 2022 Explorer lineup include a standard 400-horsepower powertrain for the Explorer Platinum, a second-row bench seat option on the Timberline, new seat trim with the XLT Sport Appearance Package, plus two new exterior colours including Stone Blue and Burgundy Velvet.
