The BMW X3 and X4 have now reached the midpoint of their current generation, so the automaker has made a number of revisions and changes for 2022. Of course, the high-performance M and M Competition models are in on the action, too.
First, if you look on the outside, you’ll notice a larger front grille, thinner headlights, as well as redesigned bumpers, taillights and exhaust finishers. Nothing major, but enough to make a difference. The class-leading drag coefficient of 0.29 is preserved for superb aerodynamic performance.

Wheel sizes range from 19-21 inches, and customers can select the M Sport Package to give the vehicles racier looks, particularly with much larger air intakes. New body colours are available such as Brooklyn Grey, Tanzanite Blue II Metallic and X4-exclusive Piermont Red. The garish Sao Paulo Yellow is found in M trim.
Inside, the centre stack is inspired by the new BMW 4 Series. The X3 features a 10.25- or 12.3-inch centre touchscreen, while the X4 and all M models come standard with the larger display. The iDrive 7 infotainment system returns instead of migrating to the iDrive 8 interface as seen in the new iX and i4 electric vehicles, but Amazon Alexa is now part of the mix. Radio controls have been repositioned, while the centre console gets a newly designed control island drawn from the current 3 Series.
The seats are upholstered in high-quality perforated SensaTec. The new upholstery offers a natural feel and a high-quality appearance while being easy to clean, BMW says. Ambient lighting is extended for an even more unique interior experience.
Mechanically, the evolution of these compact SUVs is highlighted by a new 48V mild hybrid system which alleviates the burden on the six-cylinder X3 M40i and X4 M40i models while providing a boost of 11 horsepower in key situations. Energy recuperation helps reduce fuel consumption. The official ratings from Natural Resources Canada have yet to be posted, though.
As for the 2022 X3 M and X4 M, which are available in Canada exclusively in M Competition trim, output is still rated at 503 horsepower, but peak torque made a jump from 442 to 479 pound-feet. That last figure matches the most explosive M3 and M4, with a forged lightweight crankshaft being an important contributor. Expect to save three tenths of a second in 0-100 km/h sprints, down to 3.8 seconds.
Furthermore, the mid-cycle update includes an expanded range of advanced driver assistance systems. For example, the optional Parking Assistance package now also includes Traffic Jam assist for limited access highways and Back-Up assistant, which helps retrace your way in tight or challenging situations.
The 2022 BMW X3 and X4 will enter production in late summer and arrive in dealerships shortly afterwards. We’ll update this page with pricing details for Canada when we get them.
