Before we go any further, let us remind you that the model will now be called “GR 86” following other Toyota models from the GAZOO Racing series, namely the GR Supra we all know and the hot little GR Yaris sold in Europe and even Mexico.

Faster and More Powerful
Compared with the old one, the new Toyota GR 86 increases its displacement from 2.0 litres to 2.4 litres. It now generates 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The power boost come from tweaks like increased bore size, changes to the intake and exhaust systems, and optimization of the Toyota D-4S dual injection technology.
With regard to acceleration, 0-100 km/h times have dropped from 7.2 to 6.3 seconds for the manual transmission and from 8.2 to 6.8 seconds for the automatic transmission—both featuring six gears and revised tuning. Weight-saving details like aluminum roof panels and fenders also kept the car at a nimble curb weight of just over 1,270 kilograms.
Two Trim Levels
In Canada, seven body colours (including Track bRed) and two trim levels will be offered: GR 86 and GR 86 Premium. The latter stands out thanks to LED headlights with available adaptive front lighting, a rear duckbill spoiler and sports seats upholstered in Alcantara with leather accents.
Stopping power is delivered by 295-millimetre front and 290-millimetre rear vented disc brakes. As standard, Michelin Primacy HP tires wrap 17-inch wheels, while the GR 86 Premium gets Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires on forged black 18-inch wheels.
A three-mode digital instrument cluster (Normal, Sport or Track) is paired with an eight-inch multimedia touchscreen. A cool thing about the former is that it shows an opening animation sequence inspired by the piston movements of the horizontally opposed engine when you start the car. An eight-speaker audio system is available on Premium.
Still Very Much Related to the Subaru BRZ
Since the GR 86 was once again developed together with the Subaru BRZ, component sharing continues on the safety front with AT-equipped models featuring Subaru’s EyeSight system as standard. This includes Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure Warning, Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control and High Beam Assist.
Now, how much will the 2022 Toyota GR 86 cost? The company is not answering that question at the moment, telling us we have to wait a few more months to find out (the outgoing model started at $30,150 plus destination and handling). The car will go on sale near the end of the year, just after the BRZ.
