Pagani Huayra Tricolore: 829 Horsepower for $8.6 Million

Just like it did in 2010 with the Zonda Tricolore celebrating the 50 years of the Frecce Tricolori, the Italian Air Force’s Aerobatics squadron, Pagani is introducing a new Huayra Tricolore to mark the 60th anniversary.

This road-going missile proudly wears the carbon blue and Italian flag colours that define the famous Aermacchi MB-339A aircraft. With a new body made from advanced composite materials and optimized to reach new targets in terms of lightness and performance, plus the application of aeronautics-derived technologies, materials and production processes, the Huayra Tricolore can put on a big show of its own on the road.

The various aero elements have been revised—from the front splitter and bumper to the rear diffuser and wing—in order to increase downforce while improving cooling for critical components. There’s a new airscoop mounted high between the seats, equipped with an innovative air conveying system that allows for an even greater flow of cold air directly to the engine.

Speaking of which, the twin-turbo 6.0-litre V12 specially developed by Mercedes-AMG is now capable of delivering 829 horsepower at 5,900 rpm and 811 pound-feet of torque from 2,000-5,600 rpm. It’s mated to a seven-speed sequential gearbox with electromechanical differential, while the geometry of the suspension assembly has been adjusted accordingly.

Wrapped in Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires, the 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels are inspired by the propeller of a turbine, the shape of the rear wing supports recalls the tail fin of the iconic jet, and the front hood incorporates a Pitot tube, the instrument that’s normally used to measure the macroscopic air speed and determine the aerodynamic condition of an aircraft.

Unsurprisingly, the cockpit is inspired by aviation, as well, starting with the anemometer on the centre console. The seats feature an exclusive two-tone combination in white and blue, while the emblem of the Frecce Tricolori is chiselled on the four-point seat belt fastener and embroidered on the headrests. The leather inserts with white, red and green stripes are another direct tribute to the Aermacchi MB-339A.

Production of the Pagani Huayra Tricolore will be limited to just three units, each one priced from €5.5 million or about $8.6 million CAD. A valid pilot licence may or may not be required…
