Gas-only Cars to be Banned in Quebec in 2035

The Government of Quebec wants to ban the sale of gasoline-only cars by 2035 as part of its green economy plan, which includes $6.7 billion over five years to reduce emissions.

This follows similar decisions made by British Columbia as well as the state of California in the U.S.

La Belle Province’s generous incentive of up to $8,000 for the purchase or long-term lease of a new electric vehicle will remain.

The government said it will also do its part by electrifying its provincial fleet of light vehicles as much as possible so that by 2030, 100 percent of its cars, vans and SUVs, as well as 25 percent of its pickups, will be electric.

“We are aiming for a target of 1.5 million electric vehicles on Quebec roads in 2030,” premier François Legault said in a statement on the government’s website.

The province will also expand its charging infrastructure in the process.
