Mazda CX-30 Turbo Announcement Reportedly Coming Sept. 17

While consumers in North America have yet to get a taste of Mazda’s remarkably fuel-efficient SKYACTIV-X technology, an increasing number have access to the brand’s punchy 2.5-litre turbo engine.

After debuting in the CX-9, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T joined the Mazda6 and CX-5 lineups before recently finding a home in the Mazda3 for the 2021 model year. The next stop will reportedly be the Mazda CX-30. Isn’t that great?

As was the case with the compact sedan, Mazda Mexico first broke the news.

“There is a strong rumor about the turbo CX-30. I can confirm that, indeed, the Mazda CX-30 will arrive with a turbocharged engine and AWD,” said Mazda Mexico chief operating officer Miguel Barbeyto. “We will have all the details ready on September 17th through our official site.”

Come to think of it, the CX-30 and the turbo engine are a logical match. Positioned between the CX-3 and CX-5, this new SUV is essentially a raised Mazda3 with a more adventurous personality. Both offer naturally aspirated 2.0- and 2.5-litre engines that produce 155 and 186 horsepower, respectively. With the Mazda3 getting the turbo, why wouldn’t the CX-30 follow suit?

On the other hand, it might come as a surprise for some since there’s nothing quite like it right now in the entry-level subcompact SUV segment. Expected to deliver 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque (or 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet when using premium gas), the future CX-30 Turbo will take on luxury rivals such as the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Volvo XC40. Naturally, pricing will reflect that lofty status.

We’re anxious to learn more about this vehicle including market availability. The 2021 Mazda CX-30 is already on sale across Canada. Will the CX-30 Turbo arrive later in the model year or wait until 2022? Look for an answer to come next week.
