This eighth generation of the Corvette—the first-ever with a mid-mounted engine—was engineered first and foremost as a convertible, General Motors claims. The goal from the beginning was to make sure customers wouldn’t have to sacrifice any functionality, performance or comfort when choosing this model over the coupe.

For example, you will still be able to store two golf bags in the trunk even when the hardtop is down. Meanwhile, there’s a front storage compartment that can fit an airline-spec carry-on and a laptop bag.
Hardtop? That’s right: the old fabric roof is no more. The result is a safer and quieter Corvette Convertible with a more natural coupe-like silhouette. The two-piece top can be activated at speeds up to 50 km/h in just 16 seconds. And if you don’t want the standard body-coloured unit, Chevrolet offers a Carbon Flash metallic-painted roof option.
Another notable aspect is the pair of aerodynamically shaped nacelles on the tonneau cover that help reduce air recirculation into the cabin and add an exotic touch to the car. Between them is a power-adjustable rear window that doubles as a wind deflector.
The engine, of course, is the same naturally aspirated 6.2-litre LT2 V8 that delivers up to 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque via an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. No manual gearbox will be offered this time, in case you forgot.
The new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette entered production on February 3 and the Corvette Convertible is expected to join it on the assembly line about three months later. Pricing for the latter starts at $76,898 in Canada. The Z51 Package, which adds a performance suspension and exhaust system, Brembo brakes, an electronic limited-slip differential, a front lip spoiler, a rear spoiler and a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance tires, costs $5,900.
