The Next Ford Mustang is Likely not Coming Before 2022

Can’t wait to see the upcoming, seventh-generation Ford Mustang? Sorry to disappoint you, but it looks like you’re going to have to be extremely patient.

The automaker recently posted a job offer on its corporate website and on LinkedIn. They want to hire a "Wind/Road Noise and Air Leakage Plant Vehicle Team (PVT) Engineer" to work at the Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan on what is called the "Ford 2023 Mustang S650 vehicle program."

In case you didn’t know, the current-generation Mustang is known internally with the “S550” codename. Therefore, Ford seems to be referring to the next generation of its sports coupe. The job offer also mentions specifically that the S650 “launches in 2022 as a 2023MY."

That means we will have to wait at least two more years for the next Mustang to arrive—at which point the outgoing model will be eight years old.

Sure, this feels like an eternity in today’s auto industry, but remember that the third generation (1979-1993), fourth generation (1994-2004) and fifth generation (2005-2014) of the Mustang all lived longer.

Introduced for 2015, the sixth generation was updated for 2018 and later spawned the most powerful and fastest Mustang ever: the 760-horsepower 2020 Shelby GT500, a car that sprints from 0-100 km/h in about 3.5 seconds.

We know the next Mustang will be available with a hybrid powertrain and could mark the return of the famed Mach 1. In fact, Ford says it wants to build an entire family of models around the Mustang, which of course started with the controversial Mustang Mach-E electric crossover unveiled last fall.

Ford’s plans might change at some point in the next several months, but the best advice we can give you today is: don’t hold your breath!
