All-new 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is Revealed

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe we’ve been promised earlier this year is finally coming out of its secret hiding. It will enter production in December and go on sale in Canada next spring as a 2020 model.

Customers will have to choose between the 228-horsepower 228i xDrive Gran Coupe and the 301-horsepower M235i xDrive Gran Coupe.

Quick and Super-quick

The former uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, while the latter benefits from a tuned version of the same engine (with a larger turbocharger and other modifications) and reaches triple-digit speeds in 4.8 seconds.

Both are mated to an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. When the 2 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with optional Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go function, the transmission will factor in the data from the navigation system to avoid unnecessary gear changes and always be in the correct gear for upcoming road conditions. Coasting and auto start-stop functions are also included.

With regard to performance and handling, the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe adopts technology from the i3 in the form of the near-actuator wheel slip limitation (ARB) system. This control system significantly improves traction when cornering or accelerating on wet or icy conditions, and allows wheel slip to be controlled, precisely and quickly.

The M235i xDrive model features standard M Sport brakes, suspension and steering, plus a newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential that gives it an even sharper dynamic edge. The Launch Control function allows the full peak torque of 332 pound-feet to be available in first and second gear.

The Best-looking 2 Series?

The 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a small, low-slung four-door coupe with frameless windows and a wide stance. The body uses aluminum for the hood and trunk and high-strength steel for other panels. Meanwhile, the graceful roofline incorporates a panoramic sunroof and the shoulder line rises towards the back of the car finishing in an upswept rear trunk. Full-LED headlights and taillights complete the package along with a great selection of 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The cabin impresses with super-cool ambient lighting (six available colours) and differing grain effects between the steering wheel, instrument panel and doors. When the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional is selected, the analog instruments in front of the driver are replaced by a 10.25-inch display to form a wide, all-digital interface with the similarly sized centre touchscreen.

As for space and practicality, BMW claims rear-seat legroom nearly matches that of the 3 Series. The trunk (approx. 340 litres) can be expanded by folding down the 40/20/40-split seatbacks. It opens automatically at the press of a button or, with the standard Comfort Access, with a sweeping motion of the foot under the bumper.

Pricing for the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be announced closer to its market launch.
