GMC Announces 2020 Changes and AT4 Sub-brand Expansion

General Motors of Canada has just announced the various changes and updates to its 2020 GMC pickup and SUV lineup. It also has great news for off-road enthusiasts: every single model will be available in AT4 variant within the next two years.

Let’s start at the bottom of the ladder. The 2020 GMC Terrain adds GMC Pro Safety as standard equipment on all trim levels. This safety package includes automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assistance with lane departure warning, following distance indicator, front pedestrian braking and IntelliBeam headlights.

The popular Terrain Black Edition, which adds 19-inch glass-black wheels and darkened details, has been renamed the Terrain Elevation Edition. Meanwhile, the upscale 2020 Terrain Denali features a premium suspension that includes new internal valves to deliver a more refined ride.

As previously reported, the 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine will no longer be offered with the Terrain.

The midsize GMC Acadia’s update for 2020 was announced earlier this year. It boasts fresh new styling including a redesigned grille, new front and rear facias, standard LED lighting and signature GMC C-shape lighting. Safety is improved thanks to lane change alert, side blind zone alert, rear cross traffic alert and rear park assist now being standard on SLT models and above.

There’s a new 2.0-litre turbo engine available on SLE AWD and standard on SLT, a new nine-speed automatic transmission standard for all three engines, a new electronic shifter and a more refined suspension.

The updated infotainment system and new head-up display (late availability) are nice, too, but the real pleaser is the introduction of the Acadia AT4 with more aggressive exterior styling, all-terrain tires, a standard 3.6-litre V6 engine and a twin-clutch AWD system.

The full-size GMC Yukon will carry on until a new generation arrives for 2021.

With regard to pickups, the 2020 GMC Canyon adds new features including a standard tire fill alert that provides an audible, visual indication when tire pressure is added, as well as a new available remote locking tailgate.

The All Terrain model adds the Driver Alert package, forward collision alert and lane departure warning, plus a Carbon Black Metallic exterior colour.

The larger 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 can now be specified with a 3.0-litre Duramax turbo-diesel engine, while AT4 and Denali models are available in CarbonPro Edition with a carbon fibre cargo bed.

Other tech additions include an upgraded ProGrade Trailering System that features a segment-leading 15 total available camera views, and a camera-based adaptive cruise control system that can bring the truck to a complete stop.

And finally, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD promises to be the strongest heavy-duty pickup the brand has ever sold, with a towing capacity up to a class-leading 35,500 pounds on 3500 Regular Cab, long box, two-wheel-drive, DRW diesel models.

The upgraded ProGrade Trailering System is offered here as well, while the world’s first six-function MultiPro tailgate is available on all trims and standard on SLT, AT4 and Denali. Speaking of AT4, this model can be had in Crew Cab configuration as both a 2500 and 3500 single rear wheel offering.
