Canadian Premiere of the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 in Toronto

The mighty Shelby GT500 is back, and it’s more powerful than ever. Ford’s range-topping Mustang made its Canadian debut at the Toronto Auto Show.

Equipped with a supercharged, 5.2-litre V8 that is said to develop in excess of 700 horsepower, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 should be able to blast from 0 to 100 km/h in about 3.5 seconds and clear the quarter-mile in less than 11 seconds.

This performance is achieved with the help of a TREMEC dual-clutch, seven-speed automated transmission. That’s right, there’s no manual gearbox in the new GT500. The car also benefits from a revised suspension with magnetorheological shocks, 20-inch wheels, an electronic power steering unit and massive disc brakes with Brembo six-piston callipers up front. A Handling Package and a Carbon Fibre Track Package can also be added.

Inside, the GT500 features exposed carbon fibre accenting, suede door inserts with contrast stitching, a 12-inch LCD driver instrument cluster and a SYNC 3 infotainment with eight-inch touchscreen. The options list includes Recaro racing seats, power-adjustable seats with suede accents and a 12-speaker B&O Play sound system. The 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 will arrive this fall.

Also on the American brand’s stand is the 2020 Ford Explorer, which received a thorough redesign. Its base powerplant will be a turbocharged, 2.3-litre four that develops about 300 horsepower. A hybrid variant will also be introduced with a 3.3-litre V6 and an electric motor that will produce a combined 318 horsepower, while the Explorer ST will boast a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre V6 good for 400 horsepower.

Last but not least, among the new vehicles on display is the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty, which gets revised engines, a new 10-speed automatic transmission and more technology. A 6.2-litre V8 serves as the standard engine, while a 7.3-litre gasoline V8 and a third-generation, 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel V8 will be optional. The new Super Duty will arrive this fall.
