2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Set to Burn up Drag Strips

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the very first Mustang Cobra Jet, which ruled the drag strips in 1968, the automaker will once again release a modern-day take of this legendary racing pony car.

According to Ford Performance, the 2018 edition will be the most powerful and the quickest factory-built Mustang Cobra Jet of all time. The beast will rely on a supercharged 5.2-litre V8, a variation of the Coyote engine that equips the Mustang GT, not the Voodoo V8 that’s found in the Shelby GT350. Output numbers haven’t yet been released, but breathtaking acceleration times are promised, as the car is said to clear the quarter mile in the mid-eight-second range while speeding along at 150 mph (240 km/h). According to various sources on the web, the 2016 Mustang Cobra Jet produced about 575 horsepower.

The 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet will also benefit from a four-link rear suspension, a nine-inch solid rear axle provided by Strange Engineering, NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats as well as a drag-ready coil-over suspension.

Two body colours will be offered, Race Red and Oxford White, highlighted by an optional graphics package and badging to commemorate the Cobra Jet’s 50th anniversary.

Oh, last detail: only 68 units of the Cobra Jet will be produced, and none of them will be legal on public roads. Ford will share more specification and ordering details this summer. The 2016 Cobra Jet was priced at USD$99,990.
