Honda will Unveil a New Insight in Detroit

It feels like we just got out of Honda’s newest hybrid, the Clarity, and Honda is already talking about yet another hybrid sedan. This one, as we found out this morning, will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show next month, and will carry the Insight name. Wait, didn’t Honda pull the plug on the Insight? What the heck is going on?

Fulfilling Promises

Last year, at the New York Auto Show, during the unveiling of the Clarity PHEV, Honda had promised us that by the year 2030, two thirds of its sales would consist of electrified vehicles. Remember, Honda has been lagging behind the hybrid and EV market lately. It’s therefore logical that it updates its lineup accordingly, which explains Honda’s one-two hybrid punch with the Clarity, and now this, a new Insight.

According to Honda, the 2019 Insight, paying tribute to the first car introduced back in 1999, which also happened to be the first mass-production hybrid sold in North America, is nothing more than a concept at the moment. But Honda does promise the Insight will use the same dual-motor hybrid technology as the Clarity, as well as the next Accord hybrid. Nothing has been said regarding if Insight will be a plug-in hybrid or not, but Honda claims the Insight is a compact, premium sedan that will slot between the Civic and the Accord in Honda’s lineup.

We did receive a few images, and, oddly, the Insight concept is actually good looking, unlike the Clarity, which looks totally wrong. The prototype, with its fastback demeanour, incorporates visual cues from the Civic and the Accord. The interior also seems to be rather elegant which, again, strongly resembles the Accord’s cabin.

We’ll be able to tell you more about Honda’s latest hybrid when we’ll see it in person at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
