Lexus LF-FC Concept: Heading Down the Hydrogen Path

It took a while to get here, on display at this year’s Toronto Auto Show. The Lexus LF-FC Concept was first unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show in October… 2015.

After unveiling its hydrogen-powered, compact Toyota Mirai sedan, the manufacturer’s second vehicle to use this type of energy source could be this flagship Lexus sedan.

While the LF-FC Concept has four doors, it was initially designed as a coupe. Its dimensions are pretty realistic, with regular-sized 21-inch wheels and gigantic taillight clusters that do remind us of those found on the Mirai.

The cockpit is pure Lexus, which means luxurious with white leather seats and a wood-trimmed console. The front seats seem very comfortable, while the centre console is uncluttered.

High-tech powertrain

Under the floor of the Lexus LF-FC Concept is a T-shaped hydrogen fuel tank; according the company, it sends energy to an electric motor that spins the rear wheels in addition to two smaller motors up front, powering each wheel, giving the car an all-wheel drivetrain. Lexus also says this provides impressive agility for such a big sedan.

It’s still too early to set a sale date, or if this vehicle will be produced at all. However, it is interesting to know that Toyota/Lexus has the intention of installing a hydrogen powertrain in more luxurious vehicles.
