New engines for Jaguar Land Rover

English luxury vehicle manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has announced their plans to introduce new members of its Ingenium engine family, and they’ll turn up in 2017.

After the launch of their turbo-diesel, four-cylinder engines last year, available in Canada in the Jaguar XR, XF and F-PACE models, the company will bring to market a gasoline-powered, turbocharged 2.0-litre four with three output levels.

The Ingenium 200PS will develop 197 U.S. horsepower and 269 lb.-ft. of torque, which seems a little too modest for the North American market. However, the Ingenium 250PS should be a good replacement for the current Ford-designed powerplants in the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport, with 247 hp and 269 lb.-ft. The Ingenium 300PS version of the engine will boast 296 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, and has the potential to turn up in a variety of JLR’s products.

Also in development is a new eight-speed automatic transmission, called TRANSCEND, that will replace the current automatic gearbox in the company’s lineup. This new unit is said to be about 20 kg lighter and provide better efficiency than comparable eight-speed transmissions, while enhancing off-road performance.

All this is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s plan to reduce emissions and improving fuel economy, while paving the road for future electrified powertrains, as evidenced by Jaguar’s involvement in the FIA Formula E Championship, comprised exclusively of fully electric race cars.

Expect to see these new engines and transmission appear in 2018-model year Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.
