2018 Audi S4 First Drive

The new 2018 Audi S4 is just that, all new.

While the Canadian power numbers have not been finalized, we can expect around 354bhp and 368lb/ft of torque.

That will go through an eight speed tiptronic that now has "freewheeling" as a standard function. Of course there is Quattro all wheel drive. In addition the S4 has a self locking centre diff, torque vectoring and there is an optional sport diff.

On the chassis front there is new, lightweight five link suspension on front and rear.

The car has also shed some weight. It is 75kg lighter than the previous model.

There is a host of new connection systems including Audi connect and Audi phone box. Audi virtual cockpit is also available.

New safety systems include Audi pre-sense city, basic and rear.

Driving impressions:

Most of my time was spent on the mountain roads in the country outside of Frankfurt. This is exactly where the S4 is at its best.

I like the sharp feel of the initial turn it. I like the smooth transition from power to braking. The S4 feels incredibly solid, and when pushed hard, the feeling doesn't change....it inspires confidence.

Curiously, instead of going hammer and tongs through the passes, I opted for a smooth flow at 80% and it was awesome-just one big, continuous smile.

Inside I like the full width air vents in the front. The seats are very good, with lots of lateral support. My only slight knock on it is the start stop button is a bit too far away.

The S4 is exactly what is supposed to be. It knows its roll. It's a brilliant sport sedan that can be unleashed at the press of a button

The new S4 will arrive in Canada early in 2017 as a 2018.

....and no, we won't get the Avant
