Caterham announces limited-run Superlight Twenty

As far as boutique automakers go, Caterham is, at least on this side of the pond, among the rarest of rare.

Expect that trend to only continue with the new Superlight Twenty, a limited-run Seven built to celebrate the original Superlight's 20th anniversary.

Just 20—that's right, two-zero—Superlight Twenty models will be built, each sporting the ultra-minimalist character that made the original such a classic.

Powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.6-litre Ford four-cylinder, the Superlight Twenty makes 135 horsepower and 122 lb.-ft. of torque, more than enough when you consider the car's svelte figure—tipping the scales at just 1,100 lbs.

That's good for a power-to-weight ratio of 271 horsepower-per-tonne, and enough to sling the Superlight Twenty from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

Mated to the 1.6-litre four-banger is a six-speed manual gearbox, while the car puts power down through the rear wheels and is fitted with a limited-slip differential.

Whether bought factory finished or unassembled, the Superlight Twenty gets an unpainted aluminum body, and a carbon fibre nose, wings, aero screen, dash and interior panels.

It's also fitted with carbon fibre seats, making it the only Caterham model outside of the outrageous Seven 620 R.

A full windscreen and paint is optional.

The price for self-assembly cars is £26,995, about $55,000, while factory-built models are priced at £29,995, equal to $61,350, not including options.
