Updates for the 2017 Subaru BRZ

When you talk about the Subaru BRZ—or its sister the Toyota 86—the first thing naysayers will come up with is its "lack of power." For a sports car, 200 horsepower isn’t much. I’m willing to bet those skepticals never drove the BRZ, otherwise they would realize that it has more than enough grunt to carry itself through corners, but I digress…

For 2017, the Subaru BRZ will be recognizable thanks to its updated front bumper, LED headlights and fog lights, an aluminium rear wing and new-design 17-inch wheels.

The instrument panel now features a 2.4-inch LCD display (in the Limited version) located right next to the tachometer. There is also a new steering wheel covered in buttons and leather.

The first important performance change is a new option package: aptly named Performance package, it is available on the BRZ Limited fitted with a manual transmission and includes Brembo brakes, SACHS dampers and unique wheels.

The other upgrade is under the hood. Thanks to new valves, camshafts and heads, an aluminium air intake and a reworked exhaust manifold, the 2.0-litre four now develops… 205 horsepower.

BlogA Subaru BRZ STI in the Cards?
The Subaru BRZ is a sports car blessed with exceptional handling and perfect balance, but its major shortcoming is a cruel lack of midrange torque from its naturally aspirated, 2.0-litre engine. In the last few years, Subaru often mentioned the possibility of eventually giving the BRZ a turbocharged engine upgrade.
