Audi S4 Avant: Can't Touch This

There is a popular type of vehicle in Europe that we don’t get here: the high-performance German wagon. From the Mercedes-AMG C 63 wagon to the BMW M5 Touring and the Volkswagen Golf R Variant, these cars are very desirable for some North-American enthusiasts. The only one we currently get is the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC.

A newcomer will be added to this unobtainable roster: at the upcoming Geneva Auto Show, we will see the Audi S4 Avant in the flesh for the first time.

Based on the new 2017 Audi A4, the S4 gets rid of the last generation’s supercharged engine. This time, a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre V6 generates 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. This power is then sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission on its way to the quattro all-wheel-drive system.

The S4 Avant goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and its quattro drivetrain sends 60% of the torque to the rear axle.  European customers can opt to add a rear diff that can then send this power to either the left or the rear wheel to optimize traction.

Obviously, this sporty wagon won’t be offered here; the last S4 Avant sold in North America was the B6 generation from 2003 to 2005. The new Avant will be displayed at the Geneva Auto Show on March 1st.
