Even More Hellcats For 2016

Despite the fact that the Dodge Challenger/Charger Hellcat duo costs more than $70,000, it seems that more than a few people couldn’t resist the siren song of 707 horsepower coming from a supercharged 6.2 litre V8; the total production for 2015 (around 400 units) has already been sold, and there are around 900 unfulfilled orders.

This is why Dodge announced that, starting next year, there will be over twice as many Hellcats built –although the exact number hasn’t been announced yet– and the way they will be allocated to dealerships will change.

The main problem with the 2015 Hellcat was the price inflation: while the Charger and Challenger Hellcat have an almost unbelievable power/price ratio, sometimes dealers are overenthusiastic when the time comes to write price tags. As an example, it’s pretty impossible to find a Challenger Hellcat in Canada for under $90,000, even though the MSRP is $71,890. Obviously, the manufacturer is not happy with that.

Now, instead of receiving Hellcats based on their total sale volumes, dealers will have an allocation depending on the length during which their 2015 Hellcats stayed on the lot. This means that those less-than-honest dealers that advertised their supercharged beasts for ridiculous amounts of money simply won’t get another one. Also, every dealership will know exactly how many cars they will get for the year, which will help them arrange their orders.

Finally, I have bad news if you had an order for a 2015 Hellcat; if you don’t have a delivery date yet, it won’t get built. Instead, Dodge will offer you a 2016 for the same price as a 2015, which is a good thing considering that both the 2016 Charger and Challenger Hellcat will come standard with Laguna leather, Uconnect with an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen and Sirius satellite radio for 5 years.
