Honda Axes Euro-Spec Accord
After compiling the sales numbers for 2014, Honda has finally decided to axe their European Accord. Furthermore, they also announced that they would not return to the segment.
According to the manufacturer, the German competition is to blame; with an aggressive pricing policy and a strong economy, buyers who would normally buy Accords (or something similar, like Passats or Mondeos) are now getting into entry-level premium sedans, like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
Starting in 1977, the Euro-spec Accord was built in England, and was quite different from the North American model. However, moving production to Japan in early 2000 proved to be problematic for the car, since a strong yen and high importation costs prevented the manufacturer from offering significant rebates on it.
As a reminder, the Euro-spec Accord was sold here under the Acura nameplate, bearing the TSX moniker. We can safely bet that since the TSX won’t be sold here anymore, Honda’s decision was also influenced by the fact that their sales would only decrease further.
