North American Alfa Romeo 4C Will Weigh More

We were thrilled to learn that Alfa Romeo would come back to our shores with the 4C as its first offering. The sleek little coupe is unbelievably attractive, and everybody who has driven it seems to have fallen in love with it. With yesterday’s news about which dealerships would be licensed to sell the 4C came another tidbit, this one not as good. It would seem that the North American 4C will be 155 kg heavier than the European version.

This substantial weight gain is caused by the United States’ safety laws, requiring a thicker carbon fiber tub to sustain a head-on crash with a big SUV. Also, more airbags and safety equipment had to be installed, contributing to the increased weight.

Alfa Romeo also announced that the 4C will be sold with a starting price of $53,900 USD, while the Launch Edition will be $69,695 USD. This $15,795 upgrade will give you a numbered plaque inside the car (production is limited to 500 units), black wheels, sport suspension and a less restrictive exhaust.

If hauling around the equivalent of a couple of friends in added weight doesn’t bother you, you should be able to visit one of the select dealerships and buy a 4C in the coming weeks.
