Volkswagen Polo 5 Expected at Geneva

The fifth generation subcompact Volkswagen Polo has been unveiled online. The current version of the small car was presented for the first time in Geneva in 2009.

Aesthetically it exhibits completely redesigned front and rear sections. It receives its own grille, headlamps and bumper to better differentiate it from its big brother, the Golf.

However the major improvements can be found under the hood which include new gasoline and diesel engines. The Polo will benefit from the addition of three small motors of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 litres.

Very popular in European markets, the Polo is sold in sedan, hatchback (three and five doors) as well as in GTI trim.

In 2010, I had the great pleasure to drive this car during my visit to the Geneva International Motor Show.

Polo for North America

Last year, the German brand confirmed it will bring the Polo to North America but this will not be before 2015. It will also be considered the sixth generation when it gets here.

It will go head-to-head with cars like the Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta , Honda Fit, Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio , Mazda2 , Nissan Versa and Toyota Yaris Note.

The Urban Crossover

We also learned that the German automaker intends to make an entry into the urban crossover market. They’d use the next Polo as a base to develop this vehicle with a release occurring in 2016 for the 2017 model year.

The new crossover would face the Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax and Nissan Juke, not to mention the upcoming Ford EcoSport, Mazda CX -3, and other vehicles on the way.
