Tip of the Week: Idle-stop technology

With governments around the world mandating improved fuel economy and decreased emissions across the auto industry, car makers are looking at a handful of technologies to help them get there.

And while electric vehicles and hybrids are a major help, many of them are turning to what Bill Gardiner calls "bridge technologies" to help with the economy and emissions of conventional internal combustion engines.

One of those bridge technologies is idle-stop, a feature that shuts down the engine during idling.

But how will idle-stop technology impact components like starter motors and batteries?
