Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition: The Brute Retires

On sale in its current form since 1979, the iconic G-Class remains a popular choice among the rich and famous looking for a unique SUV. Since 2012, the AMG division also offered the G 65, stuffed with a twin-turbo, 6.0-litre V12 that currently develops 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque.

Quite a brute, as it’s capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.3 seconds. Not too shabby for a 5700-lb SUV with the aerodynamic properties of a tool shed. All good things must come to an end, though, and Mercedes-Benz is celebrating the G 65’s retirement with the Final Edition, of which only 65 units will be built for worldwide consumption.

The 2018 Mercedes-AMG G 65 Final Edition will bear bronze-finished, dual five-spoke, 21-inch alloy wheels as well as silver brake callipers and AMG striping on the vehicle’s flanks. A matte brown finish will also be found on the bumpers, the brush guard, the grille surround and the outside mirrors. The running boards and the exhaust tips will keep their matte black finish.

The cockpit will get design nappa leather seats with brown contrast stitching and side bolsters that feature a carbon-fibre pattern. Carbon fibre trim elements and brown stitching can also be found spread across the dashboard, the centre console and the door panels.

The G 65 Final Edition will be sold in Europe starting at 310,233 euros, or about CAD$460,000 at the current exchange rate. In Canada, the G 550, G 550 4x42 and AMG G 63 variants soldier on for 2018, while an all-new G-Class is in development.
