2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe in the Canadian Badlands

This week, The Car Guide is heading to Alberta to get another look at the coupe version of Mercedes-Benz’s popular GLC SUV. Obviously, it’s called a coupe even though it has five doors, but the brand is rather referring to the vehicle’s coupe-like roofline and sportier character.

A new rival to the BMW X4 and the Jaguar F-PACE, two variations of this German utility vehicle will initially be offered. The 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC is equipped with a turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that develops 241 horsepower as well as all-wheel drive. The performance-oriented Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC gets a twin-turbo, 3.0-litre V6 that belts out 362 horsepower.

However, later on, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4MATIC and GLC 63 S 4MATIC will be added, both boasting a twin-turbo, 4.0-litre V8. The first one will unleash 469 hp, while the second one ups the ante to 503 hp.

We’ll be driving the GLC 300 Coupe and the GLC 43 Coupe in the Canadian Badlands, a region north-east of Calgary known for its rocky landscapes and rich deposits of fossils and dinosaur bones.

The GLC Coupe sets itself apart from its more sedate GLC brother by a more aggressive stance and muscular bodywork. Of course, cargo space and versatility are somewhat diminished due to the flatter roofline, but that’s compensated by a more dynamic drive. In short, think of it as a cross between a sports car and an SUV.

Stay tuned for all the details on Mercedes-Benz’s new entry in the compact luxury utility segment.
