2018 Range Rover Velar to be Unveiled on March 1

In a few days, a fourth Range Rover model will be added to the English manufacturer’s portfolio. The Velar, an entirely new model, will be positioned between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

As a matter of fact, the brand believes there’s a space to fill between their compact, entry-level model and their midsize model. We’re obviously excluding the Land Rover-branded products, which aren’t as luxurious and targeted to a somewhat different clientele.

The company says the name Velar is derived from the prototypes of the original 1969 Range Rover, as the word refers to a veil, or covering something up. It’s the name that was given to the 26 units built during the development of the very first Range Rover, before its official unveiling.

Whatever. Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer Gerry McGovern stated that “we call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

At first glance, the Velar boasts a very aerodynamic and rounded-out shape, including door handles that are mounted flush into the bodywork. Its roofline and thin greenhouse suggests a sporty character, and could rival the BMW X4 as well as the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

We’ll know more about the 2018 Range Rover Velar on March 1st.
