Ford Commemorates 1966 Le Mans Victory
Last weekend, Ford was trying to repeat one of the most significant events of its history. Fifty years ago, the American manufacturer managed to score the first three spots at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an endurance race that, at the time, was usually dominated by Europeans. In fact, Ford entered this competition to beat Ferrari on its home turf. To achieve that, they created the GT40, a world-beating race car, and this vehicle immediately became one of Ford’s history pieces.
At this year’s edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, three 2017 Ford GTs lined up on the starting grid, trying to repeat the heroic feat of 1966.
After an impressive race, the final result wasn’t quite what Ford envisioned: a Ferrari managed to insert itself on the podium, but the GTs still ended up finishing 1st, 3rd and 4th.
Ford wants to commemorate this important victory: for a few lucky buyers, the manufacturer will sell the GT ’66 Heritage Edition. The car features a black paint job – metallic or matte – and silver stripes. Both doors feature the #2, just like the winning car back in 1966. Twenty-inch wheels complete the exterior upgrades.
There will only be a few units of the Ford GT ’66 Heritage Edition; sadly, they are probably all sold out.
