And the 2016 Engine of the Year is...

The results for 2016 Engine of the Year, an annual award given by Engine Technology International Magazine, are in. A vast selection of powerplants were entered, and the winners have been announced in 12 different categories.

Here are the winners:

Less than 1 litre : Ford's turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder
1.0 to 1.4 litres : PSA Peugeot Citroen's turbocharged 1.2-litre three-cylinder
1.4 to 1.8 litres : BMW's turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid powetrain, featured the i8
1.8 to 2.0 litres : Mercedes-AMG's turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder, featured in the CLA 45 and GLA 45
2.0 to 2.5 litres : Audi's turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder, featured in the RS 5
2.5 to 3.0 litres : Porsche's turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six, featured in the 911
3.0 to 4.0 litres : Ferrari's twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8, featured in the 488 GTB
More Than 4.0 litres : Ferrari's 6.3-litre V12, featured in the F12tdf
Green engine : Tesla's electric powertrain
New Engine : Ferrari's twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8, featured in the 488 GTB
High-Performance engine : Ferrari's twin-turbo 3.9-litre V8, featured in the 488 GTB

So, with wins in three different categories, Ferrari's 3.9-litre, twin-turbo V8 has been named the 2016 Engine of the Year! This is the first time in more than a decade that an engine with more than six cylinders wins this award. Last year, the BMW i8's engine won the title.
