2017 Ford GT's EcoBoost V6, Soon to be Sold as a Crate Engine?
The market for crate engines is pretty good: small manufacturers buy them for their boutique supercars, race teams stockpiles them in case something goes wrong and enthusiasts swap them into their cars to give them more punch. There are a lot of different models for a variety of applications.
The most popular is obviously General Motors' LS V8, but there are different options from other manufacturers. Ford offers its Coyote 5.0L V8 and EcoBoost four-cylinder engines, Honda sells its 2.4-litre four (from the Civic Si) for those who like a small engine that revs, and some people are even turning to Toyota and Nissan V8s.
Another powerplant might soon join the list. Coming straight from Ford's 24 Hours of Daytona racecar, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 from the Ford GT might be for sale soon.
This is pretty much the engine that will find its way into the production Ford GT. The exact specifications aren't out yet, but we can expect around 630 horsepower and 539 pound-feet of torque.
While this engine will be primarily bought by professional race teams, there will obviously be a few tuners that will buy them for unexpected projects.
The news has yet to be confirmed by Ford.
