A New Record for Subaru on the Isle Of Man?

Subaru and known race-car builder Prodrive will once again team up to beat a speed record on the Isle of Man with a WRX STI.

British rally champion Mark Higgins accepted to take the wheel again, hoping to beat his own record set in 2014. That year, he ran the whole 60.67-km circuit in 19 minutes and 26 seconds, clocking in an average speed of 189 km/h.

For 2016, he will try to improve his record. Prodrive reworked the car, tweaking its aerodynamics and adding a huge rear wing. The rest of the body was revised, and the suspension gets different settings. The car’s interior has been completely gutted and replaced by a roll cage.

No specifications have been reported about the engine, but we’re pretty sure the 2.5-litre flat-four isn’t stock.

A little bit of history

Subaru and Prodrive worked together from 1990 to 2008 in the World Rally Championship (WRC). In those 19 years, they won the manufacturer’s championship three times (1995, 1996, 1997). Pilot Colin McRae (1995), Richard Burns (2001) and Petter Soldberg (2003) were all crowned champions while driving Subarus.

The Isle of Man is located between Ireland and the United Kingdom. Since 1907, the island is home to the Isle of Man TT, a motorcycle racing event. This year, the race will be held between May 28 and June 10.
