Heading West to Visit the new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

This week, The Car Guide will be heading to the southern tip of Vancouver Island in Victoria to drive the ninth-generation 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.

It's a quick generational change for the midsize Malibu sedan, with its previous makeover occurring in 2013. However, in a heavily-contested segment that features the likes of the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry, Mazda6, Nissan Altima and Kia Optima, you have to be on top of your game and this new version is expected to challenge the lot.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu will be built on an all-new platform with bigger dimensions in length and wheelbase. Despite its larger frame, Chevrolet has already announced that the Malibu's weight has dropped by 136 kilograms from its previous iteration, making it one of the lightest sedans in its midsize segment.

The Malibu will receive a new 1.5-litre turbocharged four as a base engine, with more power (160 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque) than the replaced 2.5-litre unit. We will get to test what this engine is all about around the beautiful west coast, while keeping an eye on its lower-rated fuel economy numbers that claim to be 6.4 L/100 km on the highway.

In a year of Chevrolet sedan launches, the Malibu will also be filled with new technologies. Expect to see a video of its MyLink infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, there's a “Teen Driver” feature that we've been hearing about and we expect to share more information on that system.
