That Didn't Last Long: The End Of AMG Sport

A few short months after Mercedes-Benz announced the creation of AMG Sport (a sub-brand that was about halfway between a "regular" Mercedes and a full-blown AMG performance car), the manufacturer went back on its decision and decided to axe it.

This decision was made to simplify Mercedes-Benz’s lineup; with so many different brands and names, it was starting to get difficult to know what’s what. Previous AMG Sport models will now become AMG models: The SLC 450 AMG Sport will become the Mercedes-AMG SLC 43, and the C 450 AMG Sport will now be known as the C 43. You might have noticed the "43" moniker: while these cars don’t feature a 4.3-litre engine (they are in fact fitted with a 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine), they will now wear this badge. Later this year, we will see a new, more powerful version of the E-Class dubbed Mercedes-AMG E 43.

This has been somewhat criticized, since AMG has been accused of diluting its brand in the last few years (although they are not the only ones in this situation; BMW’s M has received similar criticism) by offering more ordinary cars with a few cosmetic upgrades in an effort to attract more customers.
