Honda Unveils The 2016 Civic

It looks like Honda didn’t want to share the spotlight with anyone for the reveal of their newest Civic. Merely days after the press finished combing through the launches from the most recent auto show, Honda announced the tenth generation of their popular sedan.

The car (which was initially launched in 1972) will now be larger and more luxurious than ever.

The platform is all-new, and for the first-time in a long while, the North American market will have many different flavours of the Civic. There will be a sedan and a coupe (obviously), a performance Si version, an R model with even more power and, finally, a five-door hatchback.

Two engines will be available: a fairly classic 2-litre four-cylinder (with VTEC) offered with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a CVT, and a new turbocharged mill that displaces a mere 1.5 litres. It will be Honda’s first turbocharged engine in North America, but unfortunately it will only be available with the CVT gearbox. We don’t have the exact performance numbers for the powerplants, but they should be announced closer to launch.

According to Honda, this Civic will more being dynamic than ever: Torsional rigidity has been increased by 25%, mainly because the chassis now uses high-strength steel (12% of it is made using this material). Despite this, the new compact will be 30 kilos lighter than the model it replaces. This will in turn help fuel economy: while the EPA numbers have yet to come out, Honda is confident that the 2016 Civic can achieve to 5.8 litres of fuel per 100 km.

The 2016 Honda Civic should arrive at dealerships this fall. Like the last one, it will be built in Canada (in the town of Alliston, Ontario, more precisely) as well as in Indiana.
