First Spy Shots Of The New Toyota Prius

Last year, we reported that Toyota’s award-winning hybrid car, the Prius, would be delayed. While production was originally slated to begin last spring, the manufacturer announced that the car wouldn’t come out until the start of 2016.

However, we knew that the car would be unveiled on September 8th, 2015. Toyota seems to be well on its way to keeping its promise, since a spy managed to snap a few pictures of the all-new Prius while it was being shipped by airplane.

The first thing that we notice about the new car is that it seems to have been inspired by the all-new hydrogen-powered Mirai; from its large and pointy headlights to its swooping roof line and new taillights that are now lower in the rear panel, it’s hard to argue against the family resemblance.

The Prius’ general line has also been modified; while the current version is a 5-door hatchback, the newcomer seems to want to want to hide itself under the guise of a sedan, maybe to attract more people. Don’t fret though; the practical side of the hatchback is still there.

The new Prius will be based on Toyota’s TNGA platform. We expect that the vehicle will be powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder and an electric motor to produce around 150 combined horsepower. All this is obviously speculation though, as the manufacturer hasn’t released any official statements at this point.

To know more, we will have to wait for the official unveiling on September 8th.
