BMW Concept M4 GTS Showcases Future Technologies
The BMW Concept M4 GTS made its world debut at the Monterey Car Week in California, and according to BMW, some of its features will make their way into future production cars. The Concept M4 GTS is a foretaste of a high-performance model that would shine on a racetrack yet still be street-legal.
The concept car is equipped with the water injection system that was first seen on the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car shown earlier this year. Water is sprayed into the plenums of the intake manifold, which cools down the engine and allows the manufacturer to raise boost pressure, which in turn increases power and torque. This feature will eventually be offered on production cars.
The BMW Concept M4 GTS benefits from an adjustable carbon front splitter and rear wing as well as a hood made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic, the same lightweight material used in the conception of the BMW i3 and the BMW i8. The car is covered in a cloak of Frozen Dark Grey Metallic with Acid Orange contrast accenting. Michelin Sport Cup 2 rubber is wrapped around lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels up front and 20 inchers at the rear.
The taillights use OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology, which provides full-surface illumination instead of the usual single-point LED lighting. We can expect this type of lighting to find its way into BMW's future production cars as well.
