Uneven Safety Scores For The 2015 Ford F-150

When Ford announced that the next F-150 would be made out of aluminium, a few people were sceptical of the truck’s safety in case of an accident; some competitors (like GM), even tried to convince customers that steel is stronger.

The Dearborn manufacturer just proved that its truck was as safe and solid as ever before: during the requisite IIHS testing, the F-150 scored the top marks, even earning the coveted Top Safety Pick award. However, the truck tested was a SuperCrew version, and it seems that all trucks are not created equal.

Said SuperCrew comes with additional protection bars in front of the wheels, which helps in frontal collisions.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety therefore ran more tests, this time on an extended cab.

It performed admirably well in the side impact tests, but wasn’t as resilient in the small overlap test (in its defence, not many vehicles are). As you can see in the above video, the interior of the F-150 didn’t fare so well; the pedals and the steering wheel were bent, and the dummy’s head collided violently with the A-pillar.

Ford is aware of the problem and announced that they will modify all 2016 model-year Ford F-150s to make them as safe as the SuperCrew.
