BMW Will Unveil A 3.0 CSL Homage
BMW has announced that at the upcoming Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, one of the most prestigious automotive events on the 2015 calendar, they will present a homage to one of their most mythical coupes: the 1972 3.0 CSL.
Based on the E9 chassis, this car was built as a homologation-special (a limited-run only made to enable a racecar to enter a series) by BMW to enter the European Touring Car Championship. Since it was a racecar, it was made of thin steel, had no soundproofing and came standard with an inline-six engine, manual gearbox and an elaborate bodykit which earned it the nickname Batmobile. The car went on to win a number of races, cementing BMW’s reputation as a sporty car builder.
At the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on May 22nd, BMW designers will unveil a homage to this legendary car. By looking at the teaser above, we can see a large rear wing, massive wheel arches, side stripes and a unique paint job. We can also extrapolate that the car will be based on the 6-Series, although it’s possible that the prototype might be built entirely from scratch.
