Mercedes-AMG GT S Edition 1: With Just 30 Units, Who Are The Lucky Winners?
The new Mercedes-AMG GT super sports car has just burst onto the market. This year, we’re seeing the GT S trim, which features a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 with 503 horsepower and sells for $149,900 and up. Next year we’ll get the “regular” GT as a 2017 model. It produces 456 horsepower, comes with smaller front brakes and, most importantly, costs less.
But if the GT S has captured your heart and you want a really special version, check out the Mercedes-AMG GT S Edition 1. Just 30 units will be released in Canada. Mercedes-Benz offers these special versions whenever they launch a new AMG series. Last year, we tested Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Edition 1, and the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Edition 1 is expected soon.
The Mercedes-AMG GT S Edition 1 stands out with a hefty fixed rear spoiler. In contrast, the one on the GT S deploys at 120 km/h and retracts when you slow to 80 km/h. The spoiler is the most eye-catching aspect of the “aero” kit, which also includes an expanded front air splitter, extensions for the rocker panels and front wheel-arches and black trim on the side sill panels.
The GT S Edition 1 is capped with a carbon fibre roof, two-tone, ten-spoke alloy wheels, Nappa leather seats and Dinamica AMG fabric with red stitching. The AMG Night package comes with various shiny black accents, including two pairs of exhaust tips. The fixed spoiler and all the rest are exclusive to the Edition 1. That said, the other GT S units can be outfitted with red seat belts and an AMG Performance steering wheel swathed in the same Dinamica fabric (synthetic suede, much like Alcantara) found on the 30 Edition 1 units.
Exclusivity comes at a price, obviously. The GT S Edition 1 will cost $10,900 more than a GT S, which already starts at $149,000. When you think about it, the difference isn’t too much considering you’re getting a GT S that will hold its value over the years thanks to its exclusivity. In fact, that’s exactly what we’re already seeing with all sports cars that bear the three-point star on their grille.
