Chevrolet Corvette Z06: Frugal?

When GM announced the fuel consumption of the Corvette Stingray, we were surprised to see that a V8-powered, 400-horsepower sports car could sip fuel at a rate of 8.1L/100 km. But what about the diabolical Z06? With more than 650 horsepower on tap, we can expect it to drink more, but since it’s little sister is ‘’almost economical’’, could it be that the Z06 would finally become a car that can beat exotics and also shame a Prius at the pump?

Nope, not at all.

The EPA announced the fuel consumption of all 2015 models, and the Z06 is listed. Equipped with the 8-speed automatic transmission, the coupe will burn 18 litres of fuel to cover 100 km in the city, 10.2 on the road and 14.7 in mixed driving. While these numbers are not that bad for this type of car, I highly doubt someone will ever see these numbers in real-life driving.

But between you and me, most of the customers who buy a Corvette Z06 won’t care much about these numbers: they care about lap times, 0-100 km/h sprints, top speeds and quarter mile ETs.

As a quick comparison, the Corvette Z06 is about as fuel-efficient as the Challenger Hellcat with an automatic transmission (18.1L/100 km in stop-go traffic, 10.7 on the road and 14.7 in mixed driving).
