New Details Emerge Regarding the Next Chevrolet Volt

To stay competitive in the rapidly expanding electric vehicle market, Chevrolet will unveil the redesigned Chevrolet Volt next year. While the full car won't be presented in its entirety until the Detroit Auto Show, the manufacturer recently published a few details regarding the drivetrain of its next Volt.

First of all, the battery (developed in partnership with LG) will be 13 kg lighter than the one it replaces. It will also be able to store 20 percent more energy.

The official numbers will be announced in Detroit, but GM mentions that the car will have a better electric range than its current 61 km.

The 2016 Volt will feature 2 electric motors, and they will weigh 45 kg less than the current ones, which came out in 2010. We don't know exactly how these motors will be placed (one on each of the front wheels? One on each axle?), but we are being told that an improvement in acceleration times of around 20% is to be expected.

Finally, we know that the generator that will sit under the hood of the 2016 Volt will be a 1.5 litre four-cylinder engine featuring direct injection and a compression ratio of 12.5 to 1.

This may not be much, but we will probably know more about the car before its official launch on January 17 at the North American International Auto Show.
