A Few Details on the BMW M2

We already know that BMW’s M division is currently building their next masterpiece: based on the 2-Series Coupe, the car will bear the M2 moniker, and should be the spiritual successor to the 1M Coupe that we loved a few years ago.

According to the rumours, the coupe is set to arrive on our shores at the end of 2015. It will be powered by a turbocharged 3 litre inline-six, but not the one currently found in the M3/M4. It will be an all-new engine, based on the next crop of BMW mills that will be introduced in the next 7-Series. Engineers aim for 400 horsepower, but they will have to tread lightly to make sure they don’t step on the M3/M4’s toes, performance-wise.

We can expect the sport coupe to get a six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will also be offered). This would enable the car to reach 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, about 0.3 seconds slower than the M4. The M2 will only be available in RWD at launch, but an xDrive version should be available later on. It will also be lighter than the M235i thanks to multiple carbon fibre body panels.
