2014 Best Buys: Intermediate SUVs Over $50,000

Some models are born to shine! It all starts with a great platform. Once a platform has proven itself, automakers will use and reuse it to ensure the success of their other models.

That’s exactly what happened with the 2014 Porsche Cayenne / 2014 Volkswagen Touareg  duo. While the Cayenne is the sportier of the talented pair, the Touareg is no slouch either. Both offer great road holding, impressive performance numbers, superior assembly and off-road capabilities that far exceed the needs of 99% of buyers.

The Cayenne comes with a wide selection of engines, while its counterpart only offers two—though both are very efficient. When all aspects are taken into consideration, these two vehicles come out on par with one another, which explains the tie for first place.

Second place goes to the 2014 Mercedes-Benz ML , whose impeccable fit and trim, rock-solid chassis and exceptional diesel engine give it a serious edge on the competition. Oh, and then there’s the AMG version—swoon!

Ranked third is the 2014 Acura MDX.  Its 3.5-litre V6 is great on gas, its passenger compartment is spacious and nicely crafted, and its reliability record is nothing short of outstanding.

This ever-popular category also includes the 2014 Audi Q7, 2014 BMW X5, 2014 Infiniti QX60, 2014 Land Rover LR4, 2014 Lexus GX and 2014 Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
