Local Motors’ Latest Project

We have been eagerly awaiting the results of the vote at Local Motors. The small manufacturer was in the final phase of selection for their next vehicle, a two-seater sports car built as much for the road as for the track. Just like all the creations from this Arizonian firm, anybody could suggest a design, an idea or a concept. The members of the community then got to vote on which vehicle would be built.

After beating over 200 other submissions, the winner was the SF-01 Street Fighter. Its exposed chassis is modular, which means it could be built longer or shorter depending on the buyer’s needs. Engine choice is also up to the customer: the SF-01 can accommodate a four-cylinder, an inline-six or even a V8. The engine of choice will then sit behind the front axle, giving the vehicle great weight distribution. Power will be sent to the ground via the rear wheels, as it should be. This new car is even somewhat practical: it has two small luggage compartments over the rear wheels and a small trunk. And if the taillights look familiar, it’s because they come from a Dodge Dart (to reduce production costs).

Now, Local Motors still has a lot of things to decide, like the materials used, the available options and the manufacturing technique they will have to use. Another vote is also currently ongoing, this time to determine the new car’s name.
