More RAM than Chevrolet in May

For the first time since 1999, the order of the truck sales leaders has shifted.

Up until now, the positions were clearly established: Ford was leading, Chevrolet came in second and Dodge was bringing up third place. The Japanese automakers are not in the running, since their combined sales numbers don’t even match fourth place GMC.

With the help of the new EcoDiesel engine, RAM just overtook Chevrolet for second place in March sales in the United-States. With 42,532 trucks sold (including the heavy-duty RAM), RAM is in front by only 285 vehicles.

Meanwhile, Ford is not very concerned about this fight, having sold 70,940 F-Series trucks in the same period.

Interviewed about their position loss, Jim Cain, a GM Spokesman, was not in a particularly good mood: "The 1980s called. They want their marketing strategy back. It's really easy to deeply discount your truck, mine the subprime market and offer cheap lease deals to buy market share." RAM has not commented, preferring to let the numbers speak.

Of course, GM still sold more trucks overall, if you include the 16,863 GMC Sierras sold. But since Ford and Chevrolet were unchallenged in the top spots for nearly 15 years, RAM is probably celebrating their victory right now!
