Unveiling the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe

UPDATE: Here are some pictures of the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe, live from the New York Auto Show!

After seeing the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe at the Geneva Auto Show, it was only logical to assume the AMG version was coming, since its predecessor, the CL, had its own high-performance version as well.

So AMG's flagship has just been released. If some of you were anxious about Affalterbach's mad scientists not being able to improve the luxury and performance of the Coupe, you can now breathe easily. They have once again raised the bar in the luxury coupe segment.

They used the 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 already found in a lot of other AMG models, and massaged it to produce a very healthy 577 HP and 664 lb-ft of torque. If you are keeping numbers, that is 41 HP and 74 lb-ft of torque more than the outgoing model. Not only that, but the S63 Coupe is also lighter by 65 kg. However, it's still not a lightweight car, tipping the scales at 2115 kg. The acceleration, like all AMG products, is brutal. 0-100 is taken care of in only 4.3 seconds, and that is the rear-wheel drive version. Add the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, and that time drops to 3.9 seconds. That is Audi R8 territory. The transmission is a 7 speed auto, with three distinct mode: S (Sport), M (Manual) and C (Controlled efficiency).

One of the S-Class Coupe's most innovative features is the Curve Tilting system. It allows the car to lean into the curves, much like a biker, or a skier. Not only does it help with handling, it also shields the passengers from lateral acceleration.

If a regular, peasant S63 AMG Coupe is not enough for you, you can always equip yours with composite ceramic brakes, AMG sport seats, a Nappa leather interior or a 3-spoke flat-bottomed steering wheel.

The Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe is currently on display at the New York Auto Show. Orders for the 4MATIC version will begin in April, while those for the rear-wheel drive version start in July. Deliveries should be expected around September.
