Geneva Motor Show: My Top 5 Picks

The general consensus this year is that the 2014 edition of Switzerland’s acclaimed auto show has drawn in an excellent crop of cars. Notable new products abound! This, in turn, explains why there are more journalists and special guests than usual. After rigorously scouring the halls at the Palexpo, I’ve drawn up a list of my top five favourites from the show. Here they are in order of preference:

1. Mercedes-Benz S-Coupe
In a double whammy, this car offers exceptional looks and exceptional technology. Its style is sleek and classic, yet dynamic. Meanwhile, the interior is far from conservative. But what impressed me most is its suspension, which allows the body to lean into corners. As Mercedes-Benz’s most prestigious vehicle, it is also the brand’s most expensive.

2. Mazda Hazumi
Though still a concept car, this sub-compact will be heading into production soon as the new Mazda2 in the Japanese brand’s new plant in Mexico. It features SKYACTIV technology and will be available with a 1.5-litre diesel engine.

3. Jeep Renegade
Jeep products are in high demand all over the globe. So why not offer a smaller one especially for the European market? Its platform comes from Fiat, but they’ve made a point of giving the Renegade the brand’s signature design.

4. Lexus Coupe RC F
Once upon a time, Lexus cars were tremendously reliable, but also dull to drive and duller to look at. But if this new model tells us anything, it’s that times have changed! The RC F is an exceptional coupe, but the GT3 is even better. The highway version comes with a 468-horsepower 5.0-litre V8.

5. Lamborghini Huracan
With its spectacular exterior lines and carbon fibre body, the Gallardo’s replacement is absolutely breathtaking. But if that’s not enough to make your heart pound, consider its 610-horsepower V10. Managed by Audi, the bull brand is constantly advancing and its models increasingly use more and more carbon fibre, a Lamborghini specialty. This new generation instantly nabbed my attention.
