2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 at the Detroit Auto Show

The Z06 is slated to arrive in early 2015. And when equipped with the Z07 Performance package, its track performance surpasses the old Corvette ZR1. This sets the bar extremely high for the next ZR1, but in the meantime, let’s look more carefully at the Z06.

Its supercharged 6.8-litre V8 produces "at least" 625 horsepower and 635 lbs.-ft. of torque, thanks to the supercharger on the "V" of the engine, which is also equipped with direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. This mill is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed automatic with wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The all-aluminum chassis is derived from the one in the Corvette Racing C7.R. There are also several functional aerodynamic components that distinguish the Z06 from the Corvette Stingray, including wider fenders and vents chiseled into the body for improved air flow. There are also inlets on the rear fenders to draw fresh air into the transmission and differential coolers.

The Z06 features a carbon fibre hood and wider wheels to accommodate tires that are 2.2 inches wider up front (Michelin Pilot Sport P285/30ZR19) and 3.15 inches wider in back (Michelin Pilot Sport P335/25ZR20). The Brembo brakes come with six-pot calipers in front and four-pot calipers in back. Featuring a recalibrated version of the Stingray’s suspension, it also comes standard with Magnetic Ride Control and an electronic limited-slip differential.

Aboard, a flat-bottomed steering wheel faces the driver, who can choose from GT or Competition Sport seats. For the first time on the Z06, the roof panel is removable now that the aluminum chassis has been made more rigid. In fact, Chevrolet engineers claim that the Z06 is more rigid than the ZR1 by 20% when the roof is removed and by 60% when the roof is in place.

The first deliveries will be made in early 2015. Are you placing an order?
