Toyota Announces Redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra For Chicago Auto Show
Toyota as announced that a 'redesigned' version of the Toyota Tundra will be breaking cover at February's Chicago Auto Show. We put 'redesigned' in quotations because it's currently unclear as to whether the 2014 Toyota Tundra will debut an all-new design, or whether it will simply be a refresh of what the full-size pickup truck currently brings to the table.
Toyota needs to push back hard against its domestic competitors with the Tundra, which was introduced in its current form all the way back in 2007 and which has received very few substantial upgrades in the ensuing five year period between now and then. Meanwhile, Ford, General Motors, and Ram have each brought out completely re-vamped pickups that have relegated the competent, but no longer cutting edge Toyota Tundra to also-ran status in its segment.
The Toyota Tundra runs the risk of following the Nissan Titan - another once-good, but increasingly irrelevant full-size truck - into obscurity unless it can gain some momentum via the infusion of fresh technologies, new styling, and an upgraded interior. The Chicago Auto Show would seem to be the perfect launching point for a heavily revised Tundra, especially given the attention paid to the new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra (as well as the Ford Atlas concept) in Detroit this past month. Will we see a diesel engine? An eight-speed automatic transmission? A turbocharged V6? We'll have to wait two weeks until we can report back on where Toyota will be taking the Tundra in the near future.
